Arthritis is the most frequently reported chronic condition among seniors.

                            Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is characterized by persistent pains in joints caused by abnormal cartilage wear and tear and all joints in general. This is the most common form of arthritis.

Prevalence

Osteoarthritis reaches 10% of population women as much as men. After the age of 55 women are more likely to be affected. Prevalence increases along with age. Around 70 years old the majority of people suffer from arthritis in one or several joints.

Causes

Reasons for arthritis are multiple. Mechanism factors are in the foreground associated with genetic factors and inflammation process etc... Arthritis is an abnormal degeneration of cartilage disease. Joints wear should not cause arthritis along with age. Repetitive moves as well as micro localised injuries could provoke an abnormal wear leading finally to arthritis.

Overweight and lack of physical activity are also two influential factors.

What happens with osteoarthritis appearance?

When arthritis appears cartilage wears itself out gradually and loses its original qualities, in other words its elasticity and suppleness. Nevertheless we know now that the whole joint is deeply affected, indeed on top of cartilage, ligaments, bones, muscles and synovial fluid are spoiled. The quality of this synovial fluid which normally lubricates joints diminishes. We think that Arthritis results of cartilage damaging and rebuilding mechanisms disequilibrium: Even if there is no sign of inflammation at the beginning of the disease; it can appears over time however.

Osteoarthritis types

Elementary Arthritis: When a subject has no obvious predisposition we qualify arthritis as being elementary in that case.

Secondary Arthritis: Joints related or inflammatory diseases as well as metabolic diseases (diabetes, hemochromatosis) are predisposition which can increase the likelihood of arthritis. In addition joints injuries are also an increasing factor. When there is one or another predisposition as mentioned above we call it secondary arthritis.

Osteoarthritis symptoms:

Osteoarthritis reaches subjects in a singular way. The intensity of pain as well as the affected joints varies from one person to another.

  • Pain appears when you mobilise your joint ( i.e. knee when going upstairs).
  • Joint sensitivity felt while applying a slight pressure.
  • Joints rigidity especially while waking-up or after an unmoving time. The rigidity felt in the morning lasts less than 30 minutes.
  • A gradual loss of flexibility in the joint.
  • A discomfort feeling in the joint following a temperature modification.
  • “Cracks” especially in case of osteoarthritis in knees.
  • Gradual appearance of bone excrescence localised in the joint.
  • More rarely, inflammations (rosiness, pain and inflation of the joint).

How to prevent from Arthritis

  • To maintain a healthy weight .
  • To practice a moderate physical activity regularly .
  • To take care of joints by reducing repetitive gestures and impacts.

Non-medicinal treatments

The latest international recommendations insist on how important non-medicinal treatments for knees or hips osteoarthritis are.

Regular practice of physical activity

15 to 30 minutes three times per week: walking, swimming, aerobic, tailored muscle building etc... The intensity of activity can vary along with pain intensity.

Weight loss

In case of over-weight or obesity, a loss of 5 to 10% of our weight enables sometimes to suppress pains in case of knees osteoarthritis by lightening the body mass.

Physiotherapy

If needed

Working environment adaptation

If work causes joints traumatisms creating osteoarthritis then adapting your working environment is crucial.

In case those recommendations would not be enough, you can also supplement them with medicines in order to relieve pain. In worst cases surgeons may suggest surgery.

Aroma Celte advice:

  • Control acid-basic balance, if needed you can take Lithothamne to help balancing it. Restrict cow dairy produce and favours ones from goat or ewe.
  • Consume oleaginous fruits, seeds such as sesame in order to bring calcium which is better and easily digestible.
  • Consume low-mineral water to favour acids elimination.

In order to help you to relieve pain, we came out with two different products and advise you:
